Trauma Therapy for First Responders
Working a Job Full of Endless Chaos?
Responding constantly to the call for help at a moment’s notice, you run toward what everyone else runs from.
Then you come home. The fuse is short. You snap at the people you love. Or you go silent and absent instead.
No matter how much time off you take, the drained feeling never lifts.
One Hard Call. Or Years of Them.
One hard call brought you here.
Or years of them, stacked one on top of the next.
And somewhere in there, you started wondering if you’ve wasted a whole career.
The Two Kinds of Trauma You Carry
Here’s something most people never explain about this work.
Every hard call is a trauma your body drops into your own “trauma bucket.” It stacks on top of everything you already lived through before you ever put on the uniform.
So you’re absorbing the trauma of the people you serve. And at the same time, the job keeps triggering you back into your own past traumas.
You’re managing two kinds of trauma at once. This is vicarious trauma. It’s real, whether anyone around you names it.
No wonder the time off never fills you back up.
How You’ll Process the Weight Instead of Just Carrying It
I’ve spent 30 years in the world of trauma.
For 23 of them, I worked as a Child Protective Services social worker.
I have lived inside this work, not just read about it in a book.
Here’s what I believe: trauma is meant to be processed, not held in your body forever.
The Tools We’ll Use
The primary tool I reach for is shadow work journaling. Writing holds a kind of magic key. It lets the deepest, darkest pains release rather than stay held in your body.
Alongside that, we’ll use mindfulness techniques and trauma-focused talk therapy. And I’ll show you how vicarious trauma and the trauma bucket work.
Plenty of first responders avoid this work. I understand why. There’s the stigma. There’s the fear of a mental-health diagnosis landing in your employment record.
Let me be clear: your work with me is private. It stays yours.
In my experience, healing comes faster than most people expect.
You Can Thrive, Not Just Survive This Job
You don’t just have to survive your first responder career. You can learn to thrive despite the heaviness.
There is nothing wrong with your sensitivity. You can stop walking on eggshells with everyone in your life. You can learn to trust people again.
We do heal and thrive. It’s time to lighten that load. In my practice, I’ve watched it get lighter.
